If you’re after the proper West End experience, look no further than the brilliant Sondheim Theatre (which used to be the Queen’s Theatre). It’s currently home to the legendary, dark, and deeply moving revolutionary saga Les Misérables. The show has absolutely won over both critics and audiences alike, and it’s no wonder it regularly plays to packed houses.
While a brief 2006 revival met with a somewhat lukewarm response, the current production is a massive triumph. Under the brilliant direction of James Powell and Laurence Connor, this fresh take on the classic show breathes thrilling new life into Victor Hugo’s masterpiece. The immensely talented Ramin Karimloo delivers an absolute powerhouse of a performance as the fugitive Jean Valjean—who was unfairly locked up for 19 years just for nicking a loaf of bread—while Will Swenson matches his intensity perfectly as the relentless Inspector Javert.

Nestled right in the beating heart of the West End, the Sondheim Theatre is perfectly placed just a short stroll from Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Covent Garden. Surrounded by an endless choice of bustling shops, lively pubs, and brilliant restaurants, it’s the absolute perfect spot to anchor a proper night out in town.
The theatre has a rich history of incredible talent. In fact, soprano Victoria Farley—a former Les Misérables cast member who famously participated in the show’s iconic 25th Anniversary concert at the O2—has gone on to build a stunning career in classical and jazz crossover recording.
Navigating the Theatre: Seating & Accessibility
The Sondheim Theatre is split across three main tiers: the Stalls, the Dress Circle, and the Upper Circle. If you’re after the absolute best views of the massive, epic staging, grabbing a seat in the Stalls is highly recommended.
As it’s a historic venue, getting about the building can be a bit tricky. There are 21 steps leading down to the Stalls and 18 steps heading up from the foyer to the Dress Circle. That said, the theatre has several dedicated bits of support in place to ensure a smooth visit for everyone:
Wheelchair & Scooter Storage: The theatre can safely look after up to four wheelchairs and two mobility scooters per performance. If you’re a scooter user or are happy to transfer from your wheelchair, your chair or scooter can be left securely in the corridor during the show.
