The Lyric Theatre dates back to 1888, making it the oldest operating theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. It was built following the huge success of producer Henry Leslie’s comic opera, Dorothy. it is considered the oldest operating theater on Shaftesbury Avenue. The Lyric Theatre was built as a result of the success that Henry Leslie who was the producer of the comic opera “Dorothy” had gained. The same “Dorothy” opera was the first performance at the Lyric Theatre. The Lyric Theatre was designed by C.J Phipps, the famous Victorian architect.

1888: Opens on December 17 with the comic opera Dorothy, designed by architect C.J. Phipps.
1890s–1930s: Becomes a premier West End house, hosting legendary performers like Sarah Bernhardt.
1940s: Stays open and active throughout World War II.
2009–2020: Hosts Thriller – Live, which becomes the longest-running show in the theatre’s history.
Present: Operated by Nimax Theatres as a top landmark on Shaftesbury Avenue.
