Shaftesbury Theatre History and Design
It was designed by Bertie Crewe, a well-known theatre architect, and opened as the New Prince’s Theatre in 1911. The building is the last theatre to be constructed in Shaftesbury Avenue. It was constructed with classical Portland stone, which features dramatic carvings. There is a clock tower with a copper cupola at the entrance of the theatre. Subjected to several multi-million pound renovations, with a 35-tonne steel fly tower installed to accommodate the heavy stage equipment used today.
Interesting Fact: The renovation of the fly tower in 2016 made it possible for the venue to stage technically difficult shows such as & Juliet and Mrs. Doubtfire.
