Phoenix Theatre Grand History
The theatre opened its doors on 24 September 1930, built on the former site of a music hall and alcazar. Architects Cecil Masey and Bertie Crewe designed the building, but Russian director Theodore Komisarjevsky was brought in to create the interior.
And what a launch it was! The very first show was the premiere of Noël Coward’s famous comedy Private Lives. The opening night cast was legendary—starring Noël Coward himself, Gertrude Lawrence, and a young Laurence Olivier.
